Night at the Museum

Fog City by Sam Green

Team Fandor visits a San Francisco hot spot and is treated to a special “live documentary” performance from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green.

Last Thursday evening, a group of Fandor’s finest ventured over to the Exploratorium at its new location on Pier 15 in San Francisco for some post-work fun and mentally stimulating merriment. There was a packed house on hand for the museum’s monthly After Dark event, with an endless stream of the city’s socializers and curiosity seekers enjoying the venue’s many interactive exhibits—and a drink or two.

The highlight of the evening was filmmaker Sam Green’s performance of his new “live documentary” Fog City in the Kanbar Fourm. A love letter of sorts to the ever present fog that enshrouds the City by the Bay (to the delight or chagrin of its residents, depending on who you ask), the thirty minute documentary essay was accompanied by live ambient music courtesy of Brooklyn-based band The Quavers and in-theater narration by Green himself. The performance was a transportive and immersive one-of-a-kind experience.

Fog City was preceded by performances of two additional “live documentaries,” Green’s hilarious, and at times disturbing, The Rainbow Man/John 3:16 and the ruminative The Voyager Spacecraft, a collaboration between the filmmaker and fellow Exploratorium artist-in-residence Dave Cerf.

The performance was also the kick-off to the Exploratorium’s new Cinema Arts series Off the Screen: A Salon for Cinephiles which will merge film screenings with live events and showcase local filmmakers. Off the Screen will take place Wednesday nights at 7pm and we’ll definitely be stopping by in the future to soak up the cinematic goodness. If you live in the Bay Area (or happen to be visiting) perhaps we’ll see you there!
