Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves1905

  • 3.3
In 1905, Segundo de Chomón added intertitles and hand-tinting to a film previously released by Pathe in 1902. The events in the film play out as they do in the fairy tale: Ali Baba chances upon the Forty Thieves' desert stash-house and steals some of their treasure. His brother Cassim is executed by the thieves when they catch him trying to make off with some for himself. The thieves then hatch a plot to similarly kill any others who know about the cave but are foiled by a shrewd housemaid. Departing from the fairy tale, Ali Baba is apotheosized at the end despite his general passivity in the plot's action. - Tom Fritsche
