What makes this film worth watching?
"Like Cassavetes' A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, Ade's film is as unpredictable and ambiguous as it is raw." - Rob Nelson, Minneapolis Star Tribune

There's an awkwardness between the two lovers; a coming to know each other, that presents a certain power struggle. This film could be seen as these two reflecting on the love of Hans and his wife; however, Hans' relationship with his wife is somehow fake. Chris has envy and a desire to impress Hans at the cost of his relationship and this culminates in his copying Hans' relationship. This is very bad for his relationship with Gitti, because Hans' relationship is toxic with his wife tacitly accepting his (what I would call) neglectful abuse. I think it's this fear of becoming this that drives Gitti away and inevitably brings Chris back into the fold of their relationship prior to meeting Hans. Internal struggles of our relationships sometimes drive us improperly to seek outside counseling resulting in more damage.

Boring and trite, yes, life-like, but that doesn't make it a good movie. We don't really give a damn about this couple, or wether they stay together or not
Gitti while somewhat sexy is hard to take_i think Chris would be better off doing his own thing_definitely a lot of tension here_ a bit forced maybe and manipulated_but it's an excellent film
Two hours of tension. I was caught up in the relationship from the beginning. Yet the tension continued. His distance and work addiction left me cold. I felt she was giving up too much of herself. Near the end, I applauded when she spoke directly of her feelings. The very end left me confused. Thumbs up for the acting, and the story is a little too much like some lives I know.
This isn't some Hollywood cliche romantic drama filled with obvious answers and neat & tidy resolutions. It's messy & complicated, as relationships often are. As a viewer, you're immediately pulled into the tension of this relationship, subtext, and undercurrents that you may or may not identify with. It's a relationship that does get rather dark, and I feel both parties are involved in that dance, and Gitti is just as guilty as Chris. Gitti, I feel, is even more manipulative and calculating, as we see by the end scenes in the film. Definitely a good film.
Great movie. Another Force Majeur.
human behaviour, peer pressure and individualism - we are what we are and we are happiest as we accept our individuality
I thought the movie was very cerebral and I liked it very much. It ran the gamut of emotion for most every relationship on both the female and male point of view. Very interesting.
Very German. Very good.
A very well crafted film. While many may be put off by its slow pace, the film unfolds a meticulous dissection of a couple's relationship as they attempt to forge some sort of community with their respective feelings about each other, all the while battling the dynamics of what may well be more of a love-hate relationship than anything else. In many respects it becomes a curious variant of a sado-masochistic relationship. The two principal actors are excellent as is the direction of Maren Ade who is able to maintain a continuously detailed and compelling drama in such a bittersweet landscape.
There was a fascinating scene at the beginning when Gitti is teaching the little girl to dramatically say, "I hate you!" It's a fuse being lit.
poor
I don't get this movie... I had to read the short summary/description of the film to figure out what it's about. The movie didn't seem to describe any perspective of couple's life or love and the plot didn't flow well either. I'm not sure why this movie got good rating/review... nothing leaves me ..
It is an okay movie...
I loved this movie. I decided to watch it after seeing (and loving) Ade's latest, "Toni Erdmann"; as with that film, Ade does an excellent job of pacing the story's advancement, spending enough time early on with character development so that when the emotional beats arrive, they hit hard. Excellent performances, excellent tonal control, thoroughly engrossing from start to finish.
Amazing and realistic drama. Beautiful cinematography
Möchte wissen was die Biennale fuer gut hält.
really good dialogue and good acting
Wonderful!!!!!!!
Ein bischen Langweilig...
Great Dialogue, mediocre ending.

made no sense to me
The characters were believable and you felt the connection and the loss between the couple. Could of had a better dramatic ending.
haw to play the movie???? what to do
Very delightful, thought provoking. Felt sorry for the woman. I think she will eventually leave him.
It is very interesting how this film through a talented acting shows the idiosyncracies of a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.
This movie was such a great movie...I was so anxious throughout the entire film. The struggle this young couple had speaks so much for so many people. I really enjoyed it to the fullest.
I found it very easy to believe the characters, the emotion was real - esp. the awkard moments. Very well done and an interesting look at male/female relationships.
chillingly realistic and touching
Some complex human interactions between the two. Well, done.
good
