Hell is Sold Out1951

  • 3.2
Believed dead, French resistance fighter and author Dominic Danges returns home from a POW camp to find his house occupied by an alleged wife who's published a best-selling novel under his name. He has to curb his fury, however, when it proves best for all concerned (including the antic Hermione Baddeley as a literary agent) to maintain these phony marital and artistic arrangements just as-is. Complicating things further is the presence of war buddy Richard Attenborough who becomes a rival for the affections of the kinda-sorta "wife." This romantic seriocomedy was based on a novel by Maurice Dekobra, a wildly popular writer from the 1920s through 1950s who is almost entirely forgotten today. It was an early feature for director Michael Anderson. He would go on to much bigger things including the all-star AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS and science fiction favorite LOGAN'S RUN. Top-billed Attenborough, then a very popular British actor, became an even more famous director via epics GANDHI, CHAPLIN and A BRIDGE TOO FAR. Swedish-turned-international actress Zetterling would also do notable work behind the camera, starting with 1962's prize-winning short THE WAR GAME. - Dennis Harvey

Another wonderful British film! Even though it does belabor the point (Will he? Will she?), it is nevertheless most enjoyable.

I enjoyed this film. All 3 main actors did a great job and it had enough plot twists to keep it interesting.
