  • 3.7
A gripping police noir, LE PETIT LIEUTENANT tells the story of Antoine, an ambitious young cop from the provinces who joins a plainclothes crime unit in Paris. Antoine spends his days eagerly awaiting his first assignment, drinking with his fellow detectives and developing an unlikely relationship with his superior, a veteran policewoman with a troubled past. But when the body of a drifter is found murdered along the Seine, a seemingly routine investigation suddenly turns violent and forever changes all their lives.

A fine film about many decisions we make in life. What matters? Pursuit of a career or romance. Nothing earth shattering, but thought provoking.

Assuming that it is ethnographically correct, this tale gives insight into alcoholism, the limits of group self-recovery, French policing, the French judiciary, the urban-rural divide in France, portrait elicitation from witnesses, criminal migration in Europe, ethno-racism in France, critical-care medicine, and more.

For what the film is, it is not bad at all, it has a certain quality of feeling like documentary without the feeling of using all possible manipulations, a certain quality of frankness. It fits the script very well, which tells us about a few people, who work in the police, and it feels like they themselves would tell the story like that. No fancy stuff.

A realistic view of the deterioration of Paris.

tight police drama unencumbered by over the top gimmicks. The acting was top rate and believable. The characters were real and there was tragedy and triumph within the story.

too long

Ending was silly. Delicious film!

Described as 'a gripping police noir ', this movie blandly, in most spots, missed some fine opportunities for stronger self expression. But then again, it is a French movie and it cannot be calculated to deliver what you may expect. You may find interest in the honest assessment of French society and its shortcomings.

it should have called "le Bad Lieutenant". nothing positive to report about this movie.
