Lovely film & - as has been said here by several others, Leo was very appealing. While most young people wrestling with their sexuality don't have quite the conflicting experiences Leo had, many do. And Leo's personal struggle was handled very frank & tasteful. Particularly. the scenes with his therapist were very smartly handled and sent a positive message - to viewers, as well as Leo! While "coming out" has been the subject of many movies and literally thousands of videos on Youtube, etc., "Leo's Room" , told its story uniquely and overall gave us a very watchable experience. While I rated the movie a bit high -
four stars, I did so because of the convincing & lovely way the story evolved. The
acting, direction & artistic aspects were all good form, somewhere between 3 & 4
stars. Check it out if this sounds like your "cup of tea"; you won't be disappointed.

The movie was excellent with a great set of actors that beautifully communicated the subtleties of the maturation process toward a healthy gender identity. One may quibble with the ending, but that too was well constructed. In the end I felt good about Leo's future as a gay man and the generally positive, and reality grounded, progress the characters made in overcoming life's challenges. As a heterosexual male, it taught me a little more about the power and meaning of love; and the oppressive force of intolerance.
To be honest, I am not sure if Leo is gay, bi or str8! It seems he is gay, although it seems he is going to have a relationship with Cara, if their last phone conversation suggest this. But I wonder if he will finally see the light and try to rekindle a relationship with Serb? In any event he is in a state of flux and afraid of committing to anyone for fear of eventual rejection?
Sorry to disturb you, the final conversation with Caro, the girl, hints at the fact that Felipe, Leo's roommate, has a thing for Caro. Leo asks her to help him paint his room and adds that Felipe would be very happy too if she came over.
This was a film expressing the maturation process we all must go through, when it comes to sexuality! The characters were strong and believable! I think it touched everyone when Leo realized his love was real, especially to Cara! The ending kind of let the audience determine which direction or sex Leo had chosen, but most of all, he appeared happy! We all love a Happy Ending!
A totally engaging, lovely story, lots of suspense about what's going to happen next, Leo makes one unpredictable false dating start after another, parental pressure, lots of delicious plot twists and turns. Terrific acting by Martín Rodríguez (Leo) and by Gerardo Begérez (Seba) Unlike many good films on Fandor that are good, I was fully engaged to the screen with this one; it held held my rapt attention and I picked up the laptop several times to get closer to the screen to read facial expressions. Great writing, character development, story, acting, directing, and the music was amazing and of course the suspense kept me predicting and then getting it wrong throughout the entire film guessing until the end: girl or guy; guy or girl ... you'll get it wrong too ...
wow this way that way_ i don't think Caro's the one it's too easy_i think Seba is right for awhile_but that seems to be a fearful road to travel_cool film_i know sometimes it's hard to figure out what you want & should go after_Leo hasn't found it yet_but searching is the key_Martín Rodríguez is great as Leo_actually the whole cast is _i think his first girlfriend is perfect maybe she's just too strong_it's all well done
Worth a watch if you have nothing else to do. It was believeable, touching at times, but sloooooooow.............
I thoroughly enjoyed the first 80% or more, but then it seemed to lose itself slightly.
I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I won't go into detail. It is just a shame the director couldn't have continued with the same attention to detail and intrigue that was so evident in the first hour or so of the movie.
From reading other reviews of the movie I understand some people felt Caro was totally unnecessary, but for me she was essential to the story. At the point she entered the story there was a similarity between Leo and her, i.e. they both had unresolved issues. This for me added an extra dimension to the movie, which meant it transcended the usual coming of age / coming out of the closet flick.
Where I would agree, as far as Caro is concerned, is that this story arc was not resolved in a way that made it as integral to the overall protagonist's journey as it could have been.
To be honest, had I rated it after 85% I would probably have given it a 9, but the last 15% just didn't do it for me. Maybe after a few days reflection I might feel differently.
All of that said, I would still recommend it as there is so much to like about and so many interesting characters.
Leo comes to terms with his sexuality..Or does he?
This was an excellent gay themed film about an immature gay boy finding time between family and school and friendship.
I guess this film speaks more to a straight audience than to a gay one. As a gay man, I think that this little cute film doesn't add much to a large body of gay cinema. And please, Leo is gay, he comes out to his therapist and mentions only Seba, Sebastián. When he invites Caro, the girl, to help him paint his room Leo adds that Felipe, his roommate, will be happy to see her as well. And when she says "what did you say?," he goes "Nothing, nothing." The movie seems to say that Leo finally has accepted himself, he is happy for Caro, who sounds much better, and he is ready to face his new identity. Not a great movie, a small, heartfelt film for straight people who don't know much about gay cinema or gay identity.
If Uruguay is even half as simpatico as this film, I want to go there!
A compelling, well-done drama. Both writer and director did an outstanding production.
sweet young man
The plot was slow over all. However, Leo was devastatingly touching. The choices life throws at the characters are well chosen, the duality of life in the characters, fear vs. daring (Leo vs. Seba). Loneliness vs. togetherness, guilt vs. acceptance. The movie does not pass judgment just proposes positions, one has to know Montevideo/Uruguay to understand that homosexuality is very taboo in the overwhelming shadow of machismo which is albeit less prevalent than it its neighboring Argentina. Altogether, a sweet movie which could have done with a little more spice in it. The protagonist who played Leo will go far. Congratulations Uruguay on coming out of the shadows.
Well Done
Great acting and atmosphere. The ending was unrealistic though.
loved the movie-till the ending?? Leo suddenly is straight. Kidding or am I missing something?
Excellent coming to awareness story. As a North American this South American perspective shows me a great deal about myself. Directing is very sensitive, the actors are solid and complicated. The emotional pain we humans endure by lying is unbelievable and yet I do it as well. Great film. Music is lovely.
it was ok, another kid trying to find his sexuality. its important to know who you are and not hurt others while you are trying to discover oneself.
Realistic. Sympathetic.
Great movie.
Very well thought out plot. Excellent!
it is avery slow moving movie. I `d like movies with more skin.
Good movie, throughout, except it didn't end; it just barely reached a stopping point.
Cool! :)
Although Leo was a cutie, the movie plot was slow and never took off. I did however enjoy the coming of age discoveries Leo experienced if only they were more clearer for the viewer to stay interested.
cute leo. but this movie was bland like rice cakes and i just kept waiting for the plot. big disappointment
This movie touched me! <3 it!
great movie! endearing characters, moving performances, and a plotline many will relate to, and all will enjoy.
Good
Good story and really well put together. A little tortured perhaps and maybe could have a little better resolution in some regards, but really a good self-discovery chronicle with many parts that ring true. The lead actor was really very good, too, aside from being adorable.
I very much enjoyed this moving movie, We all share some of the situations I iked the caution displayed in Leo sharring his personal feelings.
Exelent...I didnt know it was filmed in Uruguay until I saw tha plate on the car, however I was so invilved in the movie I suspect it, the special Spanish accent from my own country move me the most and the coming out the closet story which was mine too really was so well done. I know people will criticize the s lowliness and the cinematography but the content and how the spirit of the script get into our souls is amazingly beautiful. Thanks to refresh my memories of my youth and my lovely country...
A little slow, but rings true to life, character of Leo well developed, story told obliquely but artistically. Acting throughout outstanding. Excellent production, cinematography, direction
Good characters and development. Enjoyed the naturalness of Leo's growth.
This movie really pulled on my heart strings. If you liked El Dia Que Me Amen, you will probably like this as well. The theme that resonates the most with me is the powerful force of simple kindness, and how its unexpected surfacing can show how desperately we needed it. I like that this is a movie about connecting with other people, and how the right approach is not always evident. The music is also incredible. Overall, a very well done film.
