MEANWHILE concerns Joe Fulton, a man who can do anything, from fixing your sink to arranging international financing for a construction project. He produces online advertising and he's written a big fat novel. He's also a pretty good drummer. But success eludes him. Having just broken up with his girlfriend in Brooklyn, Joe walks over the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan and has a troubling encounter with a women whom he suspects might jump. As he goes about his day, taking care of his own business and helping various strangers with their everyday hassles, he hears on the radio that someone has, in fact, jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge. With his bank account temporarily frozen on account of unpaid taxes, he must traverse the entire length of Manhattan to get the keys to a friend's apartment, giving away the few dollars he has along the way. Is Joe Fulton responsible and selfless to a fault? Maybe. He is certainly the all time hardest working unsuccessful over-achiever in New York.

"[A] perfect little breeze of smart, funny, tender, minor-key cinematic uplift that never strains itself or wears out its welcome." - Christopher McQuain

A prototypical indie drama, simple and personal, and yet brisk, engaging and free of preciosity or pretension. The protagonist is energetic and competent, even admirable, just like you or me, and yet there is a lesson waiting for him and us to learn at the end of his very busy day -- if you like to look at things that way. As a bonus, New Yorkers will enjoy the cinematic attention given to the city and especially to the crucial Brooklyn Bridge.

If you introduce your main character as a fedora-wearing man with a goatee, you're already two runs down. Make him a Swiss army knife know-it-all, and you have an aging male's dream. Trotting around topless women in their twenties. Advising businesses. Fixing sinks. "Meanwhile" is a pretty egocentric, male-dominated dad fantasy, where, even if broke, the older man is a sundial that everyone needs.

I loved, loved, loved this movie! The main character was just spot on, the story was kind and funny and wonderfully real. No fires, gunshots, rapes, car chases, just plain wonderful film making. I can't say enough about it - do it any justice with my words. Brilliant would be one though.

This film seems made for D.J. Mendel, and perhaps it is. Joe (D.J. Mendel) can do anything, fix everything, help everyone, almost. The dialog is wonderfully implausible and direct, yet it works. The film has in jokes and indie meta-ness going on but don't let it distract you, it wont. Enjoy Joe making his way through a difficult two days, the pacing is spot on and you will not regret time spent.

Enjoyable! Motivating! The main character is very relatable and that, well, is usually part of what makes a good story good. Hal Hartley has a real minimal approach to his dialog, making it known that your in his world; very distinct. Bravo!

Couldn't figure out what this was about although the acting was good.

Similar terrain and tone to earlier works like The Unbelievable Truth and Trust. Loved it!

great film, loved it
