In 1995 at the age of 43, Elle France editor Jean-Dominique Bauby suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body - except his left eye. Using that eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories from lands he'd only visited in his mind.

When the film first came out many years ago, I thought it was an accomplishment par excellence by Schnabel. And it still remains saturated with questions that derive from the burden of mortality, but in which there is also more life in it, perhaps, than life itself. So, of course, the story could only have sprung from a real man's life's story. The only criticism one might be able to level at it is how many angelic women can dance on the head of a pin? But perhaps that's how we men really see things, even more intensely when the end of the evening approaches and it is time to go home. I think so.

Painterly, naturally. It has been on my list for a long time - I'm happy to finally see it.

Haunting and sad, but there is much beauty here. Max Von Sydow is phenomenal in a small role.
