Newspaperman by day and masked crusader by night The Green Hornet (Gordon Jones) busts up small-time rackets by the big city crime syndicate in this so-so thirteen-chapter serial from Universal. When the bad guys muscle in on a flight school, the Hornet's there to ground them. When they prey on a zoo, the Hornet roars in to show them who's their keeper. When they try to get protection money from a condom store, the Hornet sees to it that they get stiffed (okay, they don't go after a condom store). Point is that the villains here are less ambitious than most serial heavies. Usually, these guys want to take over the world. Here, all the bad guys want to do is take over some dry cleaners and lemonade stands. That's still not cool, though. Thank God we've got the Green Hornet to save us. Along for the ride is trusty Asian sidekick Kato (Keye Luke), steadfast in his loyalty, his dedication and his pronunciation of his R's as L's. Also, I hope you like "Flight of the Bumblebee". It plays every two minutes here.
Pulpy, two-fisted, pre-atomic fun. The world was going to hell in 1940, but The Green Hornet and Kato managed to keep the streets safe from racketeers, thugs, and hoodlums.
The real star here is the car. “ The Black Beauty,” the Hornet’s notorious set of wheels. This first screen version of the car was a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr, an art deco hot rod that makes all the other cars around it look like covered wagons. The Green Hornet always did things with a lot of style. Ride on, Black Beauty!
Outstanding!
Infinite glory.
Another dead-on-target review. The narrative flow of this serial is a bit unique from the rest of the pack. The chapters were taken almost-directly from episodes of the radio show, thus the semi-contained aspect of the adventures. It re plays out like a TV series before the dawn of television.
