RIchard Matheson's (of literary and Twilight Zone fame) I Am Legend, which this film is based on, undoubtedly not only had an influence on George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, but on other zombie and vampire narratives in horror as well. This is a must if you like these types of narratives and if you want to experience one of Vincent Price's greatest performances.

Unlike the two big-budget remakes of this story, The Omega Man (with Charlton Heston, 1971), and I am Legend (with Will Smith, 2007), this movie had more moral ambiguity concerning the main character and had some twists not explored in the other films. Thus, it provided a more thought provoking and provocative experience for me. If you are not distracted by period film making and a constrained budget, then this can be an interesting and entertaining film, especially in contrast with the other interpretations that have been done.
Lord, what a disappointment, considering the source material this could have been a low budget gem.
I mean c'mon, this was four or five years after Twilight Zone's debut and yet they crank out something as brainless as the hokiest late 30s movie serial. Given an even halfway decent script and a Director with a lick of sense—instead they butcher it as badly as can be imagined.
Dull. Horrible acting.
Indeed, I'd previously thought Price was just camping it up, but I see now he was truly a wretched actor.
