There is both good and bad news about this scifi/horror film.

The bad news first. The acting is inconsistent. In the opening scene, the protagonist watches his experimental creation escape (reading glasses balanced on his forehead) with eyes agog. The camera stays on this close-up for an uncomfortable period of time. Other actors are way over the top as well. The old man driving down the road, upon seeing the creature, is literally slack-jawed for a solid minute (wiping his face with his handkerchief with his mouth still agape). The other half of the cast are completely emotionless and just seem to be going through the motions.

The good news is, by comparison, the acting makes the special effects seem palatable. To give the impression of a saber-tooth tiger, the camera cuts between a shot of the live animal and what seems to be a papier-mâché head with insanely long tusks. The professor's "diagram" of brain size is literally a cut- out piece of colored construction paper pinned to a chart. It spins freely when contacted by his pointer. But the best is saved for last. The Neanderthal face appears to be nothing more than a slightly-modified gorilla mask. After the cave man is injured and lying in bed, the mask slides down his cheeks slightly giving a comical appearance. My wife and I both laughed out loud.

At this point, you may have the impression that we didn't enjoy the film. That is not true. Having said all of the above, it was still very entertaining and fun to watch.
